Delta Kappa Gamma International History
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International had its beginning on May 11, 1929 at Austin, Texas. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, professor of rural education at the University of Texas, was the guiding force behind the formation of the society. Dr. Blanton was joined by a grade school teacher, a dean of women, two high school history teachers, a mathematics teacher, three elementary school principals, and three college teachers of psychology, physical education, and elementary education.
The Founders of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International believed that there was a need for an organization in which women teachers of all types could unite for efforts toward better professional preparation, fairer recognition of women’s work in the teaching profession, and in the founding of scholarships for those who need such aid in improving their professional preparation.

West Virginia State DKG
The West Virginia State Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International had its beginning on November 1, 1941, in the Club Room of the Daniel Boone Hotel in Charleston. Dr. Maycie Southall, Professor of Education, Peabody College for Teachers, Past National President of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and International Membership Chairman, is credited with forming what was originally called the Alpha Phi State Chapter. West Virginia thus became the 45th state to have a state organization.
